Tribal Recycling in California and Nevada
Many tribes are interested in growing and starting recycling programs and in increasing their revenues. The intent of this project is to work with Tribes, State, and local governments, as well as interested businesses, to develop mechanisms to make recycling more economically feasible for tribes in the State of Nevada and California and to identify ways to increase financial assets of tribes through green business.
For Nevada,
EFC9 plans to build on work conducted in 2008-09 in which we identified a variety of options, in which tribes in Northern Nevada could take. Based on results from the final report, EFC9 is working with both EPA and the Nevada tribes in developing the most appropriate next steps which may include a business plan for a Nevada tribal recycling business and/or a business plan template for tribal waste programs. All next steps must align with tribal priorities.
For California, EFC9 is working with the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians in San Diego California. In order to create a properly functioning and fully self sufficient waste management program the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians has requested technical help, specifically preparing a business plan and guidance document for a transfer station and resource recovery enterprise on the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians reservation.
